McGuireWoods Lawyer Named to Top One Hundred Labor Attorneys in the United States
McGuireWoods lawyer Mark L. Keenan has been named to the Top One Hundred Labor Attorneys in the United States by the Labor Relations Institute, Inc. (LRI). The honor places Keenan in the top one percent of all labor attorneys in the U.S.

To be eligible for consideration, lawyers must have represented clients in a substantial volume of union representation elections during the last 10 years with a win rate in excess of 50 percent, based on NLRB election results.

“We are not surprised that Mark has been given this honor,” says Fred T. Isaf, managing partner of McGuireWoods’ Atlanta office. “He is a superlative lawyer, who tirelessly and successfully represents his clients in labor matters.”

A member of McGuireWoods’ Labor & Employment Department, Keenan focuses his practice on representing management in union campaigns, union avoidance, unfair labor practice proceedings and collective bargaining negotiations. He also defends management in federal and state employment litigation, including Title VII, ADEA, ADA, FLSA and wrongful discharge claims.

Keenan was twice named a Georgia “Super Lawyer.”

DEAN MEAD AND TAVISTOCK PROPOSE A B2B CHALLENGE FOR UCF MEDICAL SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDING
Michael Minton, managing shareholder for Dean Mead and Rasesh Thakkar, senior managing director of the Tavistock Group, recently announced their support for the Scholarship Fund for the Charter Class of the University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine. They now put the challenge out for the entire business community, encouraging them to join in helping to fund the campaign to raise $6.4 million for student scholarships

A precedent setting endeavor, according to the American Association of Medical Colleges, UCF would be the first U.S. School of medicine to make such an offer. If successful, the scholarships would cover tuition and living expenses for the length of the program, giving students the opportunity to study without worrying about debt.

.“When the opportunity to make a commitment to the University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine arose, it seemed like a natural fit for us.” Minton said. “In order for Dean Deborah German to achieve her goal we encourage other businesses to step up to the plate and help us fill the College’s goal of 40 scholarships for the Charter Class.” “It is clear to us that a burgeoning medical city has excited and awakened the imagination of our community,” Thakkar said. “We need to rally to attract the best and the brightest for this first class of the UCF College of Medicine to ensure unparalleled success.”

Dean Mead and Tavistock, leading the way in this novel approach, call upon the business community to provide support of the scholarships, an essential component for the success of the school.

Cozen O'Connor Announces Changes in Firm Governance
Cozen O’Connor recently announced fundamental changes to the firm’s governance structure, to vigorously carry the firm forward as it transitions from its first generation leadership.

The new governance is based on a continuation of the firm’s strong executive culture, with broad powers to the CEO, a Management Committee to lead day to day practice and business activities and a Board of Directors predominantly elected by the firm’s shareholders and reflective of the firm’s geographic reach throughout the United States, London and Toronto. Shareholder voting on the election of directors, the admission of new shareholders and other important matters will be on a weighted voting system with weighting based on compensation. All shareholders will have the same number of shares. Founders Stephen A. Cozen and Patrick J. O’Connor have relinquished their control positions but will remain very active in the firm’s practice and policymaking, and will serve as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the firm, respectively. O’Connor will continue to serve as CEO until a successor is selected.

“Our revised governance is the result of careful study by a committee of shareholders appointed for this purpose, and reflects the advice of independent consultants with expertise in these matters,” said O’Connor. “The system is designed to continue to have the benefit of advice and active participation by the firm’s founder and leaders while transitioning decision making power and management to the shareholder body, the elected Board, and the Management Committee.”

Cozen O'Connor Attorney Jacob C. Cohn Speaks at Mealey's Asbestos Bankruptcy Conference
Cozen O’Connor member Jacob C. Cohn recently served as a featured speaker at Mealey’s Asbestos Bankruptcy Conference in Chicago, on the subject of “The Bankruptcy Code and Section 524(g) – What is Currently Allowed?” Cohn’s panel addressed recent developments in judicial interpretation of the requirements and limits of this special provision, enacted by Congress in 1994 to address the reorganization of companies plagued by asbestos claims, including the fallout from the Third Circuit’s decision in Combustion Engineering on pre-packaged bankruptcies, voting rights, and “bolt-on” relief for non-debtors under Section 524(g).

Current focuses of his practice include appellate matters, insurance coverage, bankruptcy and commercial litigation, and surety and fidelity.
