Briggs' Trudy Halla Receives MWL Myra Bradwell Award A member of Minnesota Women Lawyers
Shareholder Trudy J. Halla of Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association, accepted Minnesota Women Lawyers’ (MWL) Myra Bradwell Award at the organization’s 35th annual meeting June 13.

The Myra Bradwell Award is presented to a MWL member who expresses the highest ideals of the legal profession and possesses the qualities such as courage, perseverance and leadership on issues of concern to women. In addition, the award selection committee reviews leadership in the field and outreach activities involving other women (ie. mentoring, being a role model).

Trudy Halla has been a member of MWL for nearly 20 years. She is largely responsible for Briggs and Morgan’s continuing support and involvement of the organization, where Briggs is considered part of the “MWL 100% Club” with full female attorney participation and an anchor of its “I am MWL” campaign. She has long been a persuasive force in encouraging the firm to be proactive on issues of diversity and gender equity.

In her efforts to impact the hiring and retention of women and minorities at the firm, as chair of Briggs’ recruiting committee, Halla implemented the recommendations of the Supreme Court Racial Bias Task Force and the HCBA Glass Ceiling Task Force, as well as coordinated the firm’s response to the Self- Audit for Gender and Minority Equity (SAGE).

Halla has served on or led no fewer than 31 committees, councils, task forces or delegations within and outside the legal profession, a fact that makes her an excellent mentor and role model to other women Many of these relate directly to women, including her current role as chair-elect of Lex Mundi’s Women and the Law Practice Group and previous service as president of MWL. She also advocated with unwavering persistence for the firm’s decade-long corporate sponsorship of “The St. Catherine Forum on Women in Leadership,” a highly respected speaker’s forum for women led by the country’s largest women-only Catholic college.

In her personal life and professional development, Halla has exemplified courage and perseverance in many ways: learning an area of law that was then unfamiliar to her, public finance, in a mostly male profession during the mid-1970s; facing her husband’s death in 2000 and carrying on his legacy in leadership of the Western Golf Association and support of the nation’s largest privately funded college scholarship program through which he once benefited; and dealing with her daughter’s life-threatening illness, Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes, among others.

In her practice, Halla is a member and former head of the firm’s public finance section. She has practiced law for more than 30 years, providing legal services to all sides of a tax-exempt bond transaction as bond counsel and as counsel to issuers, underwriters, credit enhancers and borrowers.

She was elected a fellow of the American College of Bond Lawyers. She is also the recipient of numerous awards, including recognition as the “Exemplary Woman of the Community” by the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce, a top 100 female “Super Lawyer by Minnesota Law & Politics, “Attorney of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer, and receipt of the Hennepin County Bar Association’s Professionalism Award.

Halla received her B.A. from St. Olaf College and her law degree from Columbia University School of Law. She joined Briggs in 1978, after practicing with a New York City law firm, becoming part of firm management as a section head, member of Brigg’s executive committee, director and officer.

Celebrating 125 years, Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association, is a trusted name in business law and litigation services. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with an office in St. Paul, the firm has more than 170 attorneys committed to providing superior client service and sound legal counsel to clients nationwide. Briggs is a founding member of Lex Mundi, the world’s leading association of independent law firms, and serves as its exclusive member firm for Minnesota. The firm has received numerous accolades, including recognition by Corporate Counsel and clients of the firm as a “Go-To Law Firm®,” since 2005, in the areas of litigation, corporate governance, and labor and employment.

Lorelie S. Masters, a partner in Jenner & Block's D.C. office, took the oath of office on May 16, 2007, as the new President of the Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia.

Ms. Masters accepted the position at the WBADC's annual gala Awards Dinner, held at the National Building Museum in downtown Washington. The path-breaking bar group is celebrating its completion of 90 years representing the women lawyers in the Washington, D.C., area. More than 800 people attended the event.

Ms. Masters, whose one-year term began on June 1, 2007, was sworn in by Judge Noel Anketell Kramer of the D.C. Court of Appeals.

Even fewer law partners and general counsel are women of color," Ms. Masters said. She pledged to continue the WBADC's efforts to remove the barriers that women attorneys still face.

Receiving awards at the annual gala were Kim Keenan of Jack Olender and Associates, who was named Woman Lawyer of the Year for 2007, and Judy Areen, the first woman Dean of the Georgetown Law School, who received the Janet Reno Torchbearer Award.
