International law firm Dorsey & Whitney today emphatically confirmed its commitment to growing and developing its London office. The firm has made up four new partners in London, effective 1st January 2007. They are litigators Jean-Pierre Douglas-Henry, Liesl Fichardt, and Mitchell Moss, as well as corporate lawyer Alex Paterson.

"We made up more new partners in London this year than any other Dorsey office. We had an excellent group of lawyers to consider; we are growing; we are profitable; and we are confident. We expect our success here to continue, and we expect to continue welcoming new partners in London for many years to come," said Paul Klaas, managing partner of Dorsey's London office and worldwide head of its litigation practice.

Dorsey’s London office has grown to 40 lawyers, with 16 partners (including the four new partners and Mark Taylor, Corporate partner who joined Dorsey a few months ago), plus eight trainees. Pennslyvania Supreme Court Justice to Head Cozen O’Connor’s National Appellate Practice
The Honorable Sandra Schultz Newman, the first woman ever elected to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, has been tapped to head the rapidly growing nationwide Appellate practice at Cozen O’Connor, one of the country’s top 100 law firms with more than 500 lawyers practicing across 23 offices. She will join the firm officially on January 1, 2007.

Justice Newman has served since 1995 on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which is the oldest court in the country and 67 years older than the U.S. Supreme Court. Prior to that, Justice Newman was a judge for the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania and was a practicing attorney in private practice and also served as the first female Assistant District Attorney in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office.

“I have had tremendous respect for Cozen O’Connor over the years. I watched them grow from a small firm of less than ten attorneys to a broad reaching organization with over 200 skilled trial lawyers trying cases across the world. More importantly, I have heard their attorneys argue in court and have read the verdicts in cases they have championed in both trial and appellate courts at the state and federal level. Their knowledge is strong, their victories are impressive, and their dedication to clients is unwavering,” said Justice Newman. “I am, therefore, honored to join the firm to practice along side of so many attorneys who exemplify the best in our legal system.”

Justice Newman will be responsible for overseeing the firm’s very active 50+ lawyer Appellate practice, which boasts more than 75 wins and over half a billion dollars in savings and verdicts for its international corporate clients over the past two years. Just a few of the firm’s recent appellate victories include: a 9/11 World Trade Center case in the Second Circuit in which the “one occurrence” trial verdict on behalf of insurers prevailed on appeal; reversal of the largest dram shop verdict in history in which the firm won in the Appellate Division of New Jersey, saving ARAMARK more than $100 million; the dismissal of a civil rights and RICO lawsuit against a municipality and officials in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit; a new trial ordered by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in a case in which the lower court had originally assessed a verdict seven times the company’s worth; and the reversal of a $20 million verdict against Temple University Hospital.

“To build and sustain a successful Appellate practice, you need to recruit and mentor a unique group of lawyers with highly refined skill sets. The work that appellate attorneys do shapes the law, and understanding how to argue and win on appeal requires exceptional knowledge of substantive law and procedural rules. That is why we are thrilled to have Justice Newman join our team. Her wisdom, insight and experience will add significant value to our attorneys and our clients,” said firm Chairman, Stephen A. Cozen.

Cozen O’Connor’s CEO and President Patrick J. O’Connor added, “We intend to continue growing our appeals practice and Justice Newman will play an important role in that growth. With so many bet-the-company cases in courts across the country today, companies understand that an appeal will likely happen after a lower court ruling. In fact, about half of our appellate matters are referred to us post-verdict and we have been designated as special appellate counsel for some of our clients. But we are also seeing an increasing number of cases in which we are asked to sit in during the initial trial phase to prepare the strategy for an appeal.”

This move by Justice Newman further strengthens the leadership team at Cozen O’Connor. In July of this year, Lawrence T. Bowman and Ann Thornton Field were named Chair and Vice Chair, respectively, of the firm’s General Litigation department, and William P. Shelley was tapped to chair the Insurance department. Additional firm leadership announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
