<News:newsheading>The employees of Butler, Snow, O'Mara, Stevens & Cannada, PLLC, have declared the firm one of the Best Places to Work in Mississippi for 2006, according to a Mississippi Business Journal annual survey.
With more than 225 employees in the firm's Mississippi offices, Butler Snow was announced winner of the Large Company category during the Awards Kick-off Breakfast for the 23rd Annual Mississippi Business & Technology Expo January 18.
"Butler Snow strives to create an environment where hard work is valued and recognized," said Julie Yancey, Butler Snow's Director of Human Resources. "In turn, there is a great sense of family and camaraderie within the firm where everyone is ultimately working for the overall good of our clients."
The survey and awards program are designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in the state, and recognition is based on results from an online survey of company employees. All Mississippi-based employees were encouraged to participate in the survey, which consisted of 60 rating-scale questions, two open-ended questions and seven demographic questions. Employees were asked to rate the firm in areas including common purpose, culture and values, learning and development, performance and recognition and communication and cooperation.
Southern Research Group, an independent marketing firm, provided all analysis and findings from survey participants. Butler Snow, along with other category winners, will be profiled by the Mississippi Business Journal in a March 2006 special publication of the Best Places to Work.
Butler Snow is one of the largest law firms in the Mid-South. Recently celebrating its 50th anniversary, Butler Snow has been a leading presence in the Southeastern legal community since 1954. <News:newsheading>Don Clark, a Mississippi native with more than 30 years' experience in governmental, business, and municipal bond law, is the new Chair of Butler, Snow, O'Mara, Stevens & Cannada, PLLC.
Clark, who joined Butler Snow in 1998, plans to continue his practice as he takes on his new management duties. "I'll focus on executing our strategic plans," Clark said. "We want to build on our reputation as an outstanding regional law firm, with national experience in areas like healthcare litigation.
"We've got a great staff, and I plan to rely on them," Clark said. He credits his predecessor, Steve Rosenblatt, with moving Butler Snow over the past eight years from being a strong "Mississippi" firm to one with a regional and national reputation. Butler Snow, with more than 140 attorneys, has Jackson, Memphis and Gulf Coast offices. The Memphis office has grown from one attorney to 36, and the Coast Office now has 12 attorneys.
Butler Snow's focus on client service sets it apart, according to Clark, who cited the firm's high client satisfaction marks in a recent survey. "But those results only give us a higher goal to shoot for," Clark said. "We have already implemented changes, like not charging clients for routine expenses, that will help us serve clients better."
Clark, a native of Waynesboro, has a degree in political science from the University of Southern Mississippi and a law degree from the University of Mississippi. He began his legal career with the Mississippi Attorney General's office and then moved to the law firm of Crosthwait Terney & Noble, where he built a municipal bond practice.
Clark was attracted to Butler Snow because of its energetic leadership, its commitment to client service and its plans for growth. First as leader of the Public Finance and Governmental Affairs Group and then as Chairman of the Business Department, Clark has used his knowledge of how government, politics and law intersect to serve a range of private and public clients. Clark and Patti, his wife of 25 years, have two sons
"Butler Snow is committed to serving clients, locally, regionally and nationally, across a range of practice areas," Clark said. "I'm excited at the opportunity to help lead the firm forward."

<News:newsheading>Technology industry veteran and Nashville native Steve Wood Jr., has joined Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC as Of Counsel, bringing the number of Nashville attorneys in the technology group to 11.

"We pursued Steve because of his unique background in the business of technology," said Bruce Doeg, managing shareholder of Baker Donelson's Nashville office and co-founder of the firm's Business Technology Group. "As a former tech company CEO, he understands the practical technology and business challenges that business owners face and is able to help them better balance the legal issues."

Mr. Wood brings to his law practice an unusual background that includes business experience in both commercial real estate finance and the vertical market software industry. He began his career as a commercial construction lender with a major bank in Charlotte, North Carolina, for three years before returning to Nashville as a commercial mortgage banker for two more years. Mr. Wood then attended law school at Vanderbilt, where he began work on a software application for automating the administration of commercial mortgage investment portfolios.

While practicing law in Nashville in the 1990s, he co-founded a business with his father to bring the technology to market, and he eventually left law practice to devote full attention to running the growing software business. The company achieved a 35% market share and was acquired by a NYSE-listed firm, and Mr. Wood stayed for two more years as division executive with the acquiring company.

Mr. Wood then spent five years as a full-time faculty member of Vanderbilt Law School, concentrating on practical business transactional law, and as an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship at Vanderbilt's Owen Graduate School of Management. During that time he also worked as a business consultant and advisor to technology-oriented businesses.

The Business Technology group at Baker Donelson helps clients navigate the complex and wide-ranging issues of eBusiness and technology. The group's attorneys have a broad range of experience working with traditional companies incorporating technology, as well as business-to-business and business-to-consumer companies, eHealth concerns, financial service companies, eSolutions providers, capital sources and infrastructure companies.</News:newsheading>

<News:newsheading>Adams and Reese Partner and Executive Committee Chair Ann Huckstep has been named "Businesswoman of the Year" by the Birmingham Business Journal. She will be recognized at a luncheon on October 25, 2007 along with 10 other businesswomen named among the "Top Birmingham Women for 2007", an honor that Huckstep received in 2005. She is profiled in a full-page article in the September 14th edition of the Birmingham Business Journal.

Huckstep was chosen to receive this honor, most notably for making firm history as the first female ever chair the firm's Executive Committee, a position she began in November 2006. However, making history is nothing new to Huckstep. In 1971, her classmates voted her "Most Likely to Succeed." She was the first young woman ever to receive that title, but was stripped of the honor and told that her peers were supposed to have voted for a boy. Since then, Huckstep's career has been marked by many great accomplishments in her profession and in her community, and many notable "first female" titles.

In 1992, the health care attorney was the first female elected to serve on the Executive Committee of Lange, Simpson, Robinson & Somerville, one of Alabama's oldest and most prestigious law firms that merged with Adams and Reese in January 2003. In addition to becoming Lange Simpson's first female chair, Huckstep was also the first female to chair a top ten law firm in the entire state of Alabama. It was under her leadership that the Lange Simpson merger with Adams and Reese took flight, forming the largest law firm in the four state region at that time.

Huckstep is one of the top heath care attorneys in the Southeast region, and has been recognized by Best Lawyers of America for Health Care Law for many consecutive years. She represents a number of health care providers, including hospitals, medical service companies and physicians. She serves as an advisor on a broad range of matters, including compliance, accreditation, business transactions and corporate matters. She is also well-known for her extensive experience with Certificate of Need Law. In addition to health care law, Huckstep also practices in the areas of employee benefits and ERISA, mergers and acquisitions and general corporate law.

Despite devoting countless hours to her clients and her thriving legal practice, Huckstep is active in several civic and community groups, and has held numerous leadership roles among them. It is not surprising that she has also made many other "first female" milestones within those organizations. In 1987, she became the first female to chair the Board of Trustees for Christ United Methodist in Birmingham. In 1992, she was the first female to serve on the Board of Directors of the Birmingham Rotary Club. One year later, in 1993, Huckstep served as Chairman of the Board of Management of the Downtown Birmingham YMCA, and was again, the first woman to take on such an esteemed position. Huckstep presently serves as a Vice Chairman of the Birmingham Regional Chamber, as a member of its Executive Committee, as well as its legal counsel. She is on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Central Alabama, and on the Board of the Birmingham Rotary Club where she is also Sergeant at Arms. She is also a current Board Member of the Birmingham YMCA.</News:newsheading>
