We are very pleased to move forward with this strategic merger,” said Joey Smith, chairman and CEO of Williams Mullen. “It is a key step toward our goal to offer additional capabilities and resources to our clients and provides the necessary geographic footprint to differentiate ourselves as a regional firm.”

The name of the firm remains Williams Mullen, although North Carolina offices will operate under the name Williams Mullen Maupin Taylor for a transition period. Joey Smith is continuing as chairman and CEO of the merged entity.

Both are full-service law firms providing legal advice in areas such as labor and employment, corporate finance and securities, litigation, tax, government relations and more for clients in industries such as financial services, health care, transportation, technology, insurance, and real estate and development. Williams Mullen and Maupin Taylor attorneys have also served as state and local judges, state legislators, as well as Virginia and North Carolina bar association officials.

In addition to their similar practice areas, Williams Mullen and Maupin Taylor share a history of strong community involvement. Attorneys at each firm are encouraged to serve their communities, beyond the practice of law. Both firms participate in their area United Way campaigns and support numerous business and community organizations. Williams Mullen attorneys and staff hold leadership positions on the boards and committees of a wide array of non-profit organizations and colleges and universities. They also maintain their own funding entity, the Williams Mullen Charitable Foundation.

The 2007 edition of North Carolina Super Lawyers names ten Maupin Taylor attorneys as some of the best in their field.

This year’s list of Maupin Taylor’s Super Lawyers is comprised of Holmes Harden, bankruptcy; Keith Kapp, business litigation; John Mabe, construction/surety; Sam Byassee*, intellectual property; Frank Ward, labor and employment; John Williamson, medical malpractice and defense; Amos Dawson, environmental; Charles B. Neely, tax; Royce D. Powell, business/corporate; David R. Dorton, real estate transactions. This list illustrates the firm’s diverse practice and depth of experience and expertise in North Carolina.

David R. Dorton has also been included in the top 100 Lawyers, which lists those attorneys who received the highest point totals in the 2007 North Carolina Super Lawyers balloting, research and blue ribbon review process.

This recognition for these attorneys of North Carolina's oldest law firm comes on the heels of Maupin Taylor announcing their pending merger with Virginia firm Williams Mullen. As of March 1, 2007, the new firm named Williams Mullen Maupin Taylor will be one of the largest law firms in the southeast holding some of the highest percentage of attorneys rated in legal peer review services such as Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA, etc.

North Carolina Super Lawyers is a list of the state’s top five percent of attorneys in private practice, in-house counsel, prosecutors and public service lawyers. Published annually by Law and Politics, the list is based on nominations and independent research provided by licensed attorneys throughout the state. An estimated 130,000 people in North Carolina will receive this year’s edition.
