Kenyon & Kenyon LLP remains one of the 10 largest IP practices in the world, according to the latest Managing Intellectual Property (MIP) rankings, published in the September issue of the publication.

The annual survey ranked Kenyon & Kenyon seventh in the nation, up one place from last year. According to the MIP survey findings, “this year's survey illustrates the extent to which U.S. firms dwarf European and Asian counterparts. There are 12 U.S. firms with more than 175 attorneys, but none with that many in either Europe or Asia.”

The survey also shows that Kenyon & Kenyon is the largest IP practice in New York.

""The firm is proud to remain at the vanguard of IP specialty firms across the Globe,"" Managing Partner-Elect Richard S. Gresalfi said. “We pride ourselves on having a talented group of seasoned IP lawyers, with exceptional experience, delivering a full range of IP services. We are also fortunate to continuously attract top quality recruits, who can develop their careers and skills working with the best IP talent in the country.""

MIP figures are correct as of July 1, 2006 and include fully qualified lawyers as well as patent and trade mark agents, who spend at least 75 percent of their time on IP work. Paralegals, trainees, and other support staff have not been counted.

Kenyon & Kenyon LLP partner Marcia Sundeen will join other leading experts on Monday, July 10 to discuss intellectual property challenges facing companies today, at the Intellectual Property Owners Association conference Demystifying §337 Investigations at the ITC, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC.

Officials from the ITC, in-house counsel whose companies have been involved in §337 investigations, and outside counsel with extensive experience with §337 will highlight key considerations and best practices for planning and managing §337 litigations.

“The number of litigations before the ITC has greatly increased because of the speedy process it allows for obtaining exclusion orders against infringers,” says Ms. Sundeen, who will discuss the topic ""How to Decide Whether the ITC is Right for Your Case - Comparison of ITC to District Court"" with panelists Hildy Bowbeer, Chair of IPO’s International Trade Commission Committee, Peter Roossien, of Freescale Semiconductor, Inc., and George A. Hovanec, Jr., shareholder of Buchanan Ingersoll PC. Among other speakers at the conference is Deanna Tanner Okun, Vice Chairman of the U.S. International Trade Commission.

The ITC decides intellectual property disputes involving imported goods under Section 337 of the Tariff Act. Patent holders receive much faster results before the ITC than in the district courts, with most proceedings scheduled for final determination within a year to 15 months. A patent holder that is successful before the ITC can obtain an exclusion order to shut competing infringers out of the U.S. market.

Marcia Sundeen chairs Kenyon & Kenyon’s International Trade Practice Group and is based in the Washington DC office. She has over 20 years of experience litigating a wide variety of intellectual property disputes in both U.S. District Courts and the ITC. Ms. Sundeen was an attorney in the General Counsel's Office at the ITC and a Staff Attorney in the Office of Unfair Import Investigations at the ITC. She also is a recent past president of the ITC Trial Lawyers Association and is currently representing several companies in pending §337 actions.

Kenyon & Kenyon, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the US, has expanded its International Trade practice to keep up with the growing volume of litigation before the ITC in recent years. The firm also maintains the leading treatise on ITC practice, entitled Unfair Competition and the ITC: Actions Before the International Trade Commission Under Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which is published by West Group and updated annually.
